The swell started to build today but wasn't hitting my local bank quite right hence it meant packing up the 4 wheel and heading up the beach to the secret spot. Rees happened to be down for a few days and was keen. 2 - 3 footers by ourselves for and hour, classic. After a come from behind performance in the semi final of the 2011 World Titles in Portugal against Rees Duncan, Virgile went on the take the main event over compatriot Pablo. With a strong powerful style and a radial air game Virgile just might dominate the sport for the next decade. We certainly weren't disappointed as aerial manoeuvres were the norm with this group. Pablo was one of the standouts taking out the Junior title ahead of good mate Virgile Humbert but had to settle for 2nd in the open final as Virgile stepped up another gear. Ever consistent Broken Head was the spot and I certainly had my fair share of great waves. Hooked up with Darren and Liam on Saturday for a few more fun waves, Darren sporting a new Rampage "disco ball" replacing the one that got away in Santa Cruz. <div><br /></div><div>Pics by Ming check them out <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/100549141482322365490/BrokenHead#">here</a></div>paddlepowerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01643382813870719465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9126901132187025258.post-68717714278474832032011-03-28T15:07:00.003+10:002011-04-02T15:55:13.290+10:00Lots of paddling<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCxXznuQehFFPg-wgVYJV6SZ8Lm4UHV-2PVkfMatc8rh8F6IcgFo_DiMm_sOkTWStZvR1-X0Fdv2-q_y2l3Zt2crK_6nHnnuGkDa8ONhvNwjvS6xq0JLHtSYPTw10vWBW3HyQ1BLFgow/s1600/IMG_2584.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJCxXznuQehFFPg-wgVYJV6SZ8Lm4UHV-2PVkfMatc8rh8F6IcgFo_DiMm_sOkTWStZvR1-X0Fdv2-q_y2l3Zt2crK_6nHnnuGkDa8ONhvNwjvS6xq0JLHtSYPTw10vWBW3HyQ1BLFgow/s320/IMG_2584.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5588993910596667442" /></a><br />Certainly got a paddle workout today, Currumbin with a 25knot southerly and a strong sweep. Well the Kayak is now on the rack until the end of August and training for the Waveski Worlds now starts in earnest. My first surf at Fingal yesterday was a bit sketchy but still managed a few big moves, paddling is such a bitch compared to the Kayak I think I need to lose some weight.<div><br /></div><div>A couple of pics <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/100549141482322365490/FingalMar27#">here</a></div>paddlepowerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01643382813870719465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9126901132187025258.post-78055177429278225122011-03-23T14:45:00.004+10:002011-03-23T17:28:15.606+10:002011 Santa Cruz (USA) PaddleFest "survivalfest"<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg79QKED0Ab2YNNFQlFx0lbzVWjcty6nz6PvKorW5Iu_qzo42HJzBfbbVB9KZUTIDZ2j8WOjeeqTvQv7sB4Uva7sBV7O5FpVe4plKRTjPCBPoVEcCsjFsID7bMjqQdRlN_8FTs-PgRKVQ/s1600/sc.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 170px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg79QKED0Ab2YNNFQlFx0lbzVWjcty6nz6PvKorW5Iu_qzo42HJzBfbbVB9KZUTIDZ2j8WOjeeqTvQv7sB4Uva7sBV7O5FpVe4plKRTjPCBPoVEcCsjFsID7bMjqQdRlN_8FTs-PgRKVQ/s320/sc.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5587137100728525602" /></a><br />50 knot onshore winds, rain squalls, hail and 15feet + surf, would you go out? Talk about victory at sea this was crazy stuff. For the first time in 25 years the conditions beat the contest which finished up on Saturday as organisers thought the infrastructure wouldn't survive on Sunday. Galen surfed smart again to take the main prize. I needed a score of 66 in my Saturday heat to take the win but fell just short with a 63. I did get to surf Steamer Lane all by myself though. I just happen to have a few copies lying around so I thought I'd scan a few articles in to relive the glory days of the sport.
